Reducing Carbon Footprint: the Cases of Plastics and Data Centers

Jiajia Zheng
Graduate Student in Environmental Science & Management

Global climate change mitigation efforts are transforming the energy and industry sectors. This talk discusses various technological opportunities for greenhouse gas emissions mitigation through two case studies: (1) reducing the global carbon footprint of plastics; (2) reducing renewable over-generation and achieving carbon savings with data centers.

Lavender Menace 2.0: Lesbian Separatism and the Origins of TERF Ideology

Jamiee Cook
Graduate Student in English

In this talk, Jamiee will provide a brief overview of some important parts of lesbian separatist history and then consider how that history has informed Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism today. Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminism is a branch of radical feminism that excludes trans peoples and communities, and their exclusionary and violent rhetoric, Jamiee argues, stems from logics employed by separatists groups in the 1960s and 1970s. This talk will outline these connections and propose counterargument to TERF rhetoric in order to facilitate a more inclusive feminist praxis. Content warning: excerpts from separatist manifestos, which may be quoted, contain transphobic language.

This event will be moderated by Jane Faulkner, the Librarian for Research & Engagement at the UCSB Library.
