The Graduate Division is excited to announce a funding opportunity through the "Exploring and Preparing for the Professoriate" initiative for Summer 2021. "Exploring and Preparing for the Professoriate" is funded through the UC President's Pre-Professoriate Fellowship (PPPF) program.

The overall goal is to broaden the professoriate by creating pipelines for students of diverse identities into faculty positions at a broad array of institutions of higher education. The program is designed for current doctoral students who are committed to careers in academia. It will provide students with the opportunity for career development planning and relevant pedagogical training for teaching at colleges and universities during an 8-week summer institute. The program will also pair students with a faculty mentor at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) who can provide an opportunity to shadow them. A maximum of ten (10) students will be supported this summer.

Requirements for the program are as follow:

  • Participation in an 8-week summer institute with modules on diversity in higher education, exploring careers in the professoriate, preparation for undergraduate teaching at Hispanic Serving Institutions, high-impact practices, mentorship, and preparation for the academic job market. The institute will begin on June 21, 2021 and end on August 13, 2021.

For each week of the summer institute, there will be a total of eight (8) hours of activities:

    • Six (6) hours of independent reading and online video instruction, and
    • Two (2) hours of synchronous discussion on Zoom regarding readings and topics of the week

Financial Award

A stipend of $5000 be provided for your participation in the summer institute. It is imperative that you will have the time to complete all activities, including the synchronous discussion on Zoom.
