Faculty members are invited to nominate students for the 2018 Lancaster Dissertation Award Competition in both Mathematics, Physical Sciences, & Engineering and the Social Sciences. The deadline for nominations is Monday, April 2, 2018.

Faculty members are invited to nominate students for the 2018 Lancaster Dissertation Award Competition in both Mathematics, Physical Sciences, & Engineering and the Social Sciences (two awards).

Nominees for the Competition in Mathematics, Physical Sciences, & Engineering should be pursuing a doctoral degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Earth Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Environmental Science and Management, Mathematics, Materials, Mechanical Engineering, Media Arts and Technology, Physics, and Statistics and Applied Probability.

Nominees for the Competition in the Social Sciences should be pursuing a doctoral degree in Anthropology; Chicana and Chicano Studies; Communications; Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology; Economics; Education; Environmental Science and Management; Feminist Studies; Geography; Political Science; Psychological and Brain Science; and Sociology.

All nominees must be on track to complete their dissertation by June 30, 2018.The deadline for nominations is Monday, April 2, 2018.

To apply for this award, three faculty letters of support are required. Each must evaluate the significance and quality of the student's dissertation work. One letter must be from the nominee's dissertation supervisor, another from a member of the nominee's dissertation committee, and the third from a person of the nominee's choice. A dissertation abstract must also be provided (not to exceed 10 double-spaced pages). Appendices containing non-textual material, such as charts or tables, may be included. Each page should be numbered and bear the name of the nominee. This abstract may differ from the one submitted as part of the Ph.D. filing process.

Winners of the awards will receive a plaque and check for $1000. The recipient will be UC Santa Barbara's nominee for the Council of Graduate Schools ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award competition and will be a member of the 2018 Graduate Division Commencement Ceremony's Platform Party.
