Seeking nominations and applications for the Harvey L. Karp Discovery Postdoc Award

Funded through a generous gift from international business leader and entrepreneur Harvey Karp, the Harvey L. Karp Discovery Award is intended to provide seed funding to the most exceptional young postdocs at UC Santa Barbara early in their careers and support their innovative research.

This $47,000 award is presented to a postdoctoral fellow to provide seed funding in support of his/her innovative, cutting-edge research, that might be considered too risky by agencies such as NIH. The funds awarded may be used for any costs associated with the proposed project including salary, research supplies, and access to equipment and instrumentation. 

All faculty members in the Division of Mathematical, Life, and Physical Sciences (MLPS) and the College of Engineering are invited to nominate a postdoctoral fellow for this prestigious award.

Nominated postdoctoral fellows must provide:

  1. Written proposal of the suggested research, limited to no more than 3 pages, including a full budgetary analysis of the proposed research project. The total budget should not exceed $47,000. Benefits should be added if salary is included. The proposal does not route through Office of Research so overhead is not included.
  2. Curriculum vita
  3. Two letters of recommendation from: 1. Laboratory head or faculty mentor, 2. Another scientist, either at UC Santa Barbara or another institution, who is familiar with the candidate's work.
