Career & Tools

Attention Grad Slam participants! Want to get a leg up on the competition? Join us for a special workshop with Robby Nadler on the art and science behind narrative. In this workshop, you will learn what makes a compelling introduction and how to make your work appeal to strangers. Read on for more info and to RSVP.

Wednesday, February 26th, 2020 - 9:30am

We spend so much of our day communicating: ordering coffee, texting friends, speaking to professors, etc. But when you think about it, these simple acts are complex exchanges. They convert ideas that float in our mind into language that plants that same idea (when done well!) into another person's head. And the more complex the idea, the more complex the exchange becomes. This is the power and importance of narrative - and why you're going to need it to condense your research into a three-minute-talk that any person can understand.

In this presentation, you will learn what researchers have discovered about narrative and how it influences successful communication. From there, we will dissect successful Grad Slam presentations utilizing narrative to decode the structure of a strong talk. We'll specifically look at what makes a compelling introduction, how to present your findings in an audience-friendly manner, and how to make your work appeal to strangers. With this scaffold, you can then create your own talk that best emphasizes your story.

Wednesday, March 11
11am - 12:30pm
McCune Conference Room, 6020 HSSB

This workshop is open to all UCSB graduate students and postdocs (whether you are participating in Grad Slam or not). To RSVP, click here.
