Why Are Some Coral Reefs More Resilient Than Others?
An Ecological Approach

Erin Winslow
Graduate Student in Environmental Science & Management

Coral reefs are at risk globally as natural disasters are expected to increase in frequency and severity, and understanding how and if coral can withstand environmental stress remains a persistent challenge. The island of Moorea, French Polynesia, was hit with two major disturbances between 2005 and 2010, and different coral communities around the island have recovered to different degrees. Pinpointing and understanding mechanisms that drive variation in resiliency of corals in Moorea is critical to develop and implement adaptive management of reef ecosystems in the South Pacific.

Journey to a Physical World Through Computational Media

You-Jin Kim
PhD Student in Media Arts & Technology

Attempts to deliver a more realistic experience in an augmented reality environment have been aggressively researched in academia recently. Every aspect in the AR world, computer vision to spatial audio, must be computationally fabricated to simulate the physical world. All components must work together to formulate harmony, just as how the real world presents us with seamless physical experiences. These computationally generated illusions can be easily broken by an uncalibrated component. In this talk, I will discuss my research and journey of finding the balance of each component for the user to be completely immersed.

This event will be moderated by Shawn Warner-Garcia, Director of Professional Development in the Graduate Division at UCSB.
