This quarter, UCSB Carpentry is offering two R-based workshops, including an introductory R workshop for beginners and a specialized workshop for geospatial techniques in R. You may sign up for both or either free workshop depending on your interest. The geospatial workshop builds on the introductory skills in the first workshop, so if you have not had previous experience with R please sign up for both workshops.

Introduction to R

This is a 2 day, example-driven workshop for introduction to R programming. Short tutorials alternate with hands-on practical exercises, and participants are encouraged both to help one another, and to try applying what they have learned to their own work. R is commonly used in many scientific disciplines for data analysis and creating data visualizations. This workshop will focus on the basics of R programming, working with data and end with a brief intro to data visualization.

Dates: 9:00AM - 12:00PM on Thursday May 6th and Friday May 7th

Prerequisites: No previous experience with programming required

Intro to Geospatial Raster and Vector Data in R

This is a 3 day, example-driven workshop for introduction to using geospatial data in R. R is commonly used to perform spatial analysis and to generate map graphics in many scientific disciplines. This workshop will focus on visualizing the two basic geospatial data types using sample data from NSF NEON.

This workshop will move at a quicker pace than typical Carpentry workshops. Knowledge of R and the Rstudio interface are required.

Dates: 9:00AM - 12:00PM Wednesday May 12th to Friday May 14th

Prerequisites: Introductory knowledge of working with data in R required. Please attend the May 5-6 Introduction to R workshop or work through the material on your own if you do not have previous experience with R or need a refresher.
