This year, UCLA medical and public health students are continuing the tradition of bringing together faculty, students, and community members for the annual Healthcare Symposium.

The Symposium will take place on Zoom on Saturday, February 13 and Saturday, February 20 from 9am - 12pm PST.

Historically, this event has sought to explore new and emerging trends in healthcare, with the hope of catalyzing discussion and engagement by students, faculty, and the broader community. This year, UCLA invited 10 prominent speakers from all over the US to address the underlying health disparity, mental health, incarceration, and racism issues that permeate the COVID-19 pandemic. Speakers include:

  • Dr. Medell Briggs-Malonson, MD, MPH, MSHS, the interim Chief of Health Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for the UCLA Hospital and Clinical System, the director of Quality of Emergency Medicine for UCLA Health, and an associate professor of Emergency Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine. A nationally recognized healthcare improvement advisor, speaker, and best-selling author, Dr. Briggs held several hospital executives and department leadership positions including as the inaugural quality executive of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital located in South Los Angeles and founder and CEO of Contour Health Solutions.
  • Dr. Drew Ramsey, MD is a psychiatrist, author, farmer, teacher, and advocate who is a long-time proponent of the healing power of food and has been featured on the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, Lancet Psychiatry, and NPR. Dr. Dennis Hsieh, MD, JD is the chief medical officer at Contra Costa Health Plan and a former director for Social Medicine and Community Health for Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, which is part of the LA County Department of Health Services.
  • Dr. David E. Hayes-Bautista, PhD is a distinguished professor of Medicine and the director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture (CESLAC) at the David Geffen School of Medicine.
  • Dr. Damon Tweedy, MD is an associate professor of psychiatry at Duke University School of Medicine and an award-winning author of Black Man in a White Coat: A Doctor's Reflections on Race and Medicine, which made the New York Times bestseller list and was selected by TIME Magazine as a top non-fiction book that year.
