Graduate Writing Expectations: An Honest Conversation

Mon Sep 17 | 10:30-11:30a
Student Resource Building, 2154 (map

Writing is something we do all the time, yet rarely do we appreciate its complexity. This is to say that while we write constantly, we might not be actually viewing writing as a multifaceted skill that changes from context to context. This workshop will explore what it means to write at the graduate level—a level that few entering students are prepared to write at when they begin their academic careers. By better understanding what graduate writing entails (and how to prepare for something you have never done before), you will be positioned to approach graduate writing with proper expectations and strategies for success.

Planning Your Career Trajectory: Tips, Tricks, and Guides to Help You Succeed in Grad School

Thu Sep 20 | 10:30-11:30a
Student Resource Building, 1103 (map

It may seem premature to think about what you’ll do after you graduate at the start of your graduate program. However, the truth is grad school is not a placeholder for career development since it's not your final destination. Rather, it’s an opportunity to think about and develop your values, interests, and skills as you figure out the next step in your path. No matter what type of career path you’re interested in (or even if you're not sure what you’re interested in yet), the time you spend doing career exploration during grad school will help you reach your destination faster. This workshop will help you understand how the skills you gain in grad school can benefit you in a variety of careers. We’ll go over a general timeline of how you can be proactive to set yourself up for successful career planning in grad school, as well as valuable information and resources to help you along the way.
