OVERVIEW
The Mellinchamp 21st Century Global Dynamics faculty cluster recently announced graduate research fellowships that are open to advanced UCSB PhD students with a research emphasis that is aligned with the specific themes for this year: 1) Gender and Islam and 2) Globalization studies and Sociology.

Fellowships provide one academic quarter of in-state tuition/fees plus a stipend of $7,500 to PhD students in the humanities and social sciences. Fellows work under the direction of a Mellichamp Professor, providing support for research in one of the cluster's four areas of emphasis: gender and Islam, human rights, globalization/political economy, and media & culture. Research duties are multi-faceted and will be based on the nature of the professor's current projects.

Fellows must be in residence during the term of the award and log twenty hours of work per week. They must secure approval for any other on-campus employment during the fellowship quarter. In some cases, fellowships may be renewed for an additional quarter. During the award quarter the fellow is also encouraged to plan and submit a 1200-1500 word essay on their research for publication in the online journal global-e.

Fall 2020 Call for Applications

1. Gender and Islam
The Fellow will support Mellichamp Professor Janet Afary on media research, content development, and student interaction for a digital internship program, with ability to update Wordpress, design PowerPoint slides, and upload videos for various websites and YouTube. Some of the responsibilities include video editing, graphic design, vlogs (research required) and update of social media content. Familiarity with InDesign and audience engagement methods such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Work begins on September 4, 2020 and ends November 25 (Thanksgiving). Must also be available for troubleshooting during this period.

2. Global Studies (Globalization, Sociology, Development Studies)
They are seeking an advanced PhD student in the field of globalization studies with an interest in research on COVID-19. The Fellow will conduct research for publications on contemporary globalization, working with Mellichamp Professor Jan Nederveen Pieterse. Ability to work 20 hours a week in Fall 2020 is required.
