Description

The goal of the Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is to support highly talented graduate students in New England and California who demonstrate outstanding leadership potential and who are committed to a career in environmental improvement. The Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is in its 26th year of existence. The Foundation broadly defines its interest in the environment and the means by which positive results can be achieved. Awards have been made to students pursuing environmental policy, economics, land and water conservation, public health, journalism, architecture, environmental justice, business and law as well as sciences including biology, chemistry, and engineering.

Award

The Switzer Fellowship provides:

  • a one-year $15,000 cash award;
  • access to other Switzer grant programs and career support; and
  • membership in the Switzer Fellowship Network, an active and engaged community of nearly 600 environmental leaders in the U.S. and around the world.

Eligibility

This year, they are particularly interested in seeing more applications from minority students and those whose work encompasses an environmental justice or equity component. Additionally, they want to make sure they continue to receive as many applications as possible from appropriate masters-level programs. (Please note, they still encourage applications from Ph.D. students as long as there is an applied focus of the applicant's work, and he or she can articulate their vision for the near-term application of their work.)

IMPORTANT NOTE

As a reminder, the Switzer Fellowship is NOT intended to be a research fellowship. Leadership potential is a more significant factor in their evaluation than the specifics of a particular graduate research project. They fund individuals doing a wide variety of innovative, applied environmental work and they fund Fellows in many different disciplines (e.g., science, law, policy, engineering).
