Climate Change and Sense of Place: Where Art and Science Overlap

Lucy Holtsnider
Graduate Student in Art

Error Carried Forward: How to Spend 50 Years Discussing a Substance that Doesn't Exist

Rebecca Reitz
Graduate Student in Materials

YSi2 does not exist. And yet the scientific literature has had a lot to say about this compound over the last half-century, including characterizing its crystal structures, melting point, thermal expansion coefficient, and oxidation properties. The story of YSi2 reveals some interesting information about how the scientific process functions in the real world. This talk will describe how YSi2 propagated through the literature and how we were able to demonstrate that it did not belong there with an emphasis on the general lessons that can be derived from this tale.

This event will be moderated by Shawn Warner-Garcia, Assistant Director of Professional Development for the UCSB Graduate Division.
