What is IIASA?

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is an independent, international research institute with National Member Organizations in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe.

Through its research programs and initiatives, the institute conducts policy-oriented research into issues that are too large or complex to be solved by a single country or academic discipline. This includes pressing concerns that affect the future of all of humanity, such as climate change, energy security, population aging, and sustainable development.

The results of IIASA research and the expertise of its researchers are made available to policymakers in countries around the world to help them produce effective, science-based policies that will enable them to face these challenges.

What is the YSSP and who should apply?

The Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) is designed for PhD students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their PhD) working on a topic compatible with ongoing research at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work. Participants will work under the direct supervision of an experienced IIASA scientist, will produce a paper (serving as the first step towards a publishable journal article), and will have the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the institute's worldwide network.

Applicants can choose to work with up to two programs and are strongly encouraged to contact the various program representatives and carefully read through all program descriptions before making a decision.

Applicants from all countries are welcome, although IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of National Member Organizations (NMO) countries.

Deadline

The 2021 YSSP will be accepted from October 1, 2020 until January 14, 2021

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, so it is to your advantage to apply early.
