Designing an Undergraduate Research Project
With David Weld, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, UC Santa Barbara
When: Wednesday, June 5th, 3:30-5:00pm
Where: Elings Hall Rm 1605

Limited Space, RSVP required

How do you determine the right scope and level of research for your summer intern? What should you consider? This interactive workshop will tackle those questions and also present ideas for how to nurture your intern's independent thinking, how to deal with set-backs and how to check student progress. To facilitate discussion, please email your proposed intern research project description (½ page) to CSEP (cnsi-csep@ucsb.edu) by Monday, June 3rd. Prof. Weld will select from the submitted projects to provide examples on how to improve project design. Mentors will also break out into small groups to discuss how they can implement the ideas presented to improve their proposed intern projects.

A Workshop for those Mentoring Research Interns this Summer
With Jens-Uwe Kuhn, Dean, Santa Barbara City College
When: Tuesday, June 11th, 11:30am-2pm
Where: Elings Hall Rm 1601
*Lunch provided*
Limited Space, RSVP required

In this second PDS summer mentor preparation workshop, Dr. Kuhn will provide a brief introduction to mentoring goals, aligning expectations between mentors and mentees, and strategies for day-to-day managing of a summer research intern project and making it a successful experience for both you and your intern. In small groups, you will share your ideas, tips, and thoughts on mentoring based on your summer project (in whatever raw, or refined, state it is in). This workshop is open to anyone who will be mentoring a STEM summer research intern. Please note that you must RSVP to attend this as we will email participants a 1 page worksheet to review in preparation for the workshop.
