TA Pedagogical Advisor (TAPA)

TA Development Program (TADP)
Position available for 2018-19 academic year
$21/hour, flexible schedule with approx. 5-15 hours/week

Context: The Office of Instructional Consultation's (OIC) mission is to provide UCSB with the highest caliber professional consultation in matters of instructional design, delivery and evaluation. One of OIC's programs is the Teaching Assistant Development Program (TADP). TADP supports academic departments in designing and offering centralized training for their TAs and to assist the campus in preparing graduate students for their teaching role as future university faculty.

Job Description: The team of TA Pedagogical Advisors (TAPAs) supports the TA Development Program, under the guidance of the Senior Instructional Consultant, by serving as peer consultants to TAs in a spectrum of departments across UC Santa Barbara. The TAPAs will support the following campus-wide TADP programs:

• TA Video and Consultation: Offer peer consultation to TAs regarding their recorded teaching sessions. The TAPAs engage TAs in a discussion of their classroom practices, and how they could be improved, across a variety of disciplines. Click here to hear past TAPAs talk about their TA Video and Consultation experience. TAPAs provide each TA with a written summary of the consultation.

• Quarterly TA Pedagogy Workshops: TAPAs design and offer at least one workshop per quarter on principles, strategies, and techniques of teaching. The workshops support and compliment TA training activities within the academic departments.

• Graduate Student Teaching Symposium: Assist in planning a one-day symposium focused on 1) strategies for securing teaching jobs in higher education and 2) graduate student presentations about their teaching. The program for last year's Symposium can be accessed by clicking here.

The TA Pedagogical Advisors meet for one hour each week during the Fall and Winter quarters with the Senior Instructional Consultant to expand their skills and expertise.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you have:

• Already advanced to candidacy in a PhD program at UCSB
• At least three quarters of teaching experience at UCSB (as a TA and/or Teaching Associate)
• Experience using a variety of teaching approaches
• A desire to work with TAs to help them improve their teaching
• An interest in learning more about college and university pedagogies
• The ability to make non-judgmental observations
• Aptitude for communicating across disciplines
• Some experience in training/mentoring others is helpful, but not essential
