Join the Office of Student Life for an engaging discussion with four local non-profit professionals engaged in activism and advocacy. This panel discussion will explore four individuals' successes and challenges in taking care of one's self while pursuing urgent and important societal change.
Topics will include: maintenance of physical, emotional, and spiritual health and wellbeing; moving through challenges including overwhelm and burnout; responding to social pressure and societal messages; and the intersection of personal identities and leadership.
This session is intended for self-identified activists and advocates in all sectors who are seeking insight into best practices for preserving one's wellbeing in order to be able to sustain what is often time-intensive and emotional labor over the long term.
Panelists:
- Eder Gaona-Macedo: Executive Director, Future Leaders of America: Teaching young leaders to take pride in their cultural diversity, strengthening their leadership capacity, and sharing the value of an education to achieve their full potential for success in their academics, career choices, and in life.
- Jordan Killebrew: Communications Officer, Santa Barbara Foundation: Facilitates the building of philanthropy, strengthens the nonprofit sector, and identifies and strategically addresses important community opportunities and needs in Santa Barbara County. Founder, Project Isla Vista Love: Grassroots campaign that exceeded the $50,000 fundraising goal to build IV Love and Remembrance Garden.
- Maritza Mejia-Wilson, Executive Director, FeelGood: A youth movement to end extreme poverty by 2030. Founding Board Member, Adsum Education Foundation: founded in 2010 to respond to the urgent unmet needs of undocumented students in Santa Barbara County.
- Elena Richardson, Associate Director, Fund for Santa Barbara: A non-profit community foundation that supports grassroots organizations working for social, economic, environmental and political change in Santa Barbara County.
