Space System Loral (SSL) and Genentech are both leaders in their respective industries. SSL works to provide reliable communication satellites and satellite systems while Genentech discovers, develops, manufactures and commercializes medicines to treat patients with serious or life-threatening medical conditions. The information sessions below will help you learn more about their work and the career opportunities available.

Space Systems Loral

SSL is a leading provider of commercial satellites and spacecraft systems, with broad expertise to support satellite operators and innovative space related missions. The company designs and manufactures spacecraft for services such as direct-to-home television, video content distribution, broadband internet, mobile communications, and Earth observation. Based in the heart of the Silicon Valley, SSL's advanced product line also includes state-of-the art small satellites, and sophisticated robotics and automation solutions for remote operations. College graduates from a variety of engineering and related fields are hired directly into the SSL Core Engineering Directorate, which is an organization set up to facilitate mobility around the company that consists of five Core Teams:

  • Payload Systems Engineering
  • Spacecraft Systems Engineering
  • Electrical & Software Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering

Core Engineering Members will have the opportunity to rotate through various Engineering positions, providing them with the chance to take on and master a specific role before rotating to another role, and allowing them to apply their progressively evolving skill set on new engineering disciplines. The goal of this rotation program is to provide individuals with experience in design, production, manufacturing, and test, so that they can gain a sense of each position prior to settling on a specific area for further specialization.

Genentech

When: November 17, 7-8 p.m.
Where: Career Services, Room 1109

This event will be put on by UCSB's Genentech Campus Ambassadors in order to introduce students to the work that is done in the Biotech industry at Genentech. Campus Ambassadors are a new resource at UCSB that are here to assist in the process of applying to jobs and internships at Genentech within many departments, including Research and Development, Manufacturing Technology, Business Operations, and more. In addition, the presentation will discuss the company culture and show what it's like to work for a company that's been in Fortune Magazine's "Top 100 Companies to Work For" for the past 18 years.
