Interdisciplinary Research CollaboratoryInterested in using social media in your research? Public data from social media provides a rich context for exploring topics and asking questions that relate to all aspects of the human experience.

To help you get started in social media research, the UCSB Library's Interdisciplinary Research Collaboratory is offering a series of four workshops during Fall 2016 to provide an orientation to tools, techniques, and considerations for working with Twitter data.

All workshops are open to UCSB students, staff, and faculty. Space is limited, so please register early.

Collecting Twitter Data
Date: Tuesday, October 4, 10:30-noon
Instructor: Shari Laster

Are you interested in using social media data in your research? Often the first step entails figuring out how to collect social media data. In this workshop you will learn how to use a simple command line tool called twarc to collect Twitter data.

Working with JSON Twitter Data using JQ
Date: Monday, October 17, 10:30-noon
Instructor: Thomas Padilla

Increasingly both cultural heritage organizations and corporations like Twitter provide access to data in the JSON (javascript object notation) format. Many popular tools for analyzing this data ask for data in the CSV (comma separated values) format. In this workshop you will learn how to use a simple command line tool called jq to create subsets of Twitter data in the CSV format.

Mapping Social Media Data
Date: Thursday, November 3, 10:30-noon
Instructors: Jon Jablonski and Tom Brittnacher

A great deal of social media data is richer than it appears. For example, photos on Instagram and tweets on Twitter often include geospatial information. In this workshop you will learn how to create interactive web maps of social media data using CartoDB and ArcGIS Online.

Sharing Social Media Data
Date: Monday, November 14, 10:30-noon

So you've engaged in a bit of social media study. How can you share that data and data you might generate in the course of studying it? In this workshop you will learn about approaches to sharing data and places where you can provide persistent access to it.
