Join the UCSB Library's Scholarly Publishing and Communication Discussion List!

The goal of the newly created email list is to bring together UCSB faculty, graduate students, librarians, administrators, editors, peer reviewers, and publishers to discuss changes and trends in academic publishing, share experiences, and imagine what they want in a scholarly communication system of the future.

Initial topics of discussion may include:

  • UC policies, resources, and services such as the UC open access policies, eScholarship, UC Publication Management System, and Data Management Planning Tool
  • Author rights and intellectual property issues
  • Initiatives from university, independent, open access, and commercial publishers
  • Open-source publishing platforms
  • Alternative metrics (altmetrics) and other impact factors
  • Researcher IDs

Scholarly communication is the system through which research and other scholarly writings and knowledge are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future use. Scholars are the owners of the system, but the Library is here to support faculty in navigating, understanding, and bringing to bear their influence to improve the system.

The traditional scholarly communication system has been changing rapidly, especially with regard to publishing. Knowing where to get information is a challenge. The UCSB Scholarly Publishing and Communication Discussion List is for sharing information about the changes, trends, developments, issues and challenges that impact researchers, the Library, and the university.

To join the list, send an email to Sherri Barnes, Scholarly Communication Program Coordinator, at sherri.barnes@ucsb.edu.
