The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) will be implementing a new employment policy for international students, effective starting September 28, 2023.

Old Policy
In the past, international students were permitted to work a total of 20 hours per week, across on and off campus (Curricular Practical Training and Pre-Completion Academic Training) opportunities when school was in session. For example, if an international student was working 20 hours on campus, then they would not be eligible to participate in CPT or Pre-Completion Academic Training during the Fall, Winter, or Spring quarters. In consultation with our assigned Student & Exchange Visitor Program representative and colleagues within our national organization of international educators, we have updated this policy.

New Policy
Starting this Fall, international students may work 20 hours on campus and 20 hours off campus when school is in session. For example, F-1 international students may work on campus for 20 hours per week and do CPT for 20 hours per week during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters.

International students may:

  • work 20 hours on campus when school is in session
  • work 20 hours off campus (CPT or Pre-Completion Academic Training) when school is in session
  • work 20 hours on and 20 hours off campus when school is in session
  • work over 20 hours on campus when school is not in session (during break periods)
  • work over 20 hours off campus (CPT or Pre-Completion Academic Training) when school is not in session (during break periods)

International students may not:

  • work over 20 hours on campus when school is in session
  • work over 20 hours off campus (CPT or Pre-Completion Academic Training) when school is in session

International students will be notified of this change on September 1, 2023, in the OISS monthly newsletter.

This is the only employment policy that is changing and all other employment policies remain intact. Please contact the OISS office at oiss@sa.ucsb.edu if you have questions. OISS staff will also be discussing this new policy at the OISS International Student Services Mini Conference on September 6, 2023. There are still spaces available, so please register on Shoreline if you wish to attend.
