The UCSB Library's DREAM Lab is hosting several data carpentry workshops this Winter Quarter. Currently the DREAM Lab is hosting two events in conjunction with The Carpentries as well as other data-centric programs. Be sure to check out their upcoming offerings!

Carpentry Workshop: Introduction to Version Control with Git & GitHub

When: January 30 and Feb 1, 2024, from 1:00pm - 4:30pm

Where: UCSB Library (Room 2509)

This two-day workshop introduces git, a command line tool for managing revisions in coding projects, and GitHub, a web-based platform for sharing your work and collaborating with others. The workshop is oriented toward learners with little or no previous experience with either git or GitHub. It will cover steps for setting up a git project, making changes, navigating the revision history, basic shell / Unix commands, sharing work on GitHub, and managing conflicts.

Carpentry Workshop: Introduction to Web Scraping

When: February 27 and 29, 2024 from 1:00pm - 4:30pm

Where: UCSB Library (Room 2509)

This two-day workshop introduces tools for turning web pages into analyzable data. We will explore common web scraping scenarios and learn how to use XPath and a web browser to extract data from websites without needing to write code.  We will also discuss the ethics of web scraping. UCSB Carpentry is volunteer-run by fellow researchers at UCSB and the greater Santa Barbara area, and is always open to new volunteers to help in these workshops.  We may also sponsor your Carpentry Instructor certification if you would like to build up your teaching skills.  Email us at dreamlab@library.ucsb.edu if you are interested.
